The Museum and Archives of Izmir has born as a big wish and project of deceased Mayor of Izmir, Ahmet Piriştina. He has chosen the ancient Fire Department Center building (built in 1932) and started the project in 2000. The first part, the City Archives, is on the second floor. You can reach the documents and photos digitally arranged in the searching room. Also there is an open library which contains 11000 books on Izmir and History of Izmir, including donates of Mr. Piriştina and journalist-historian Orhan Koloğlu. Second part, the museum, presents a visual history of the city. The museum also organizes exhibitions to enrich the city knowledge.
One part of the building is used as the secondary building of National Library. It contains 1440 volumes of ottoman and 800 volumes of Latin alphabet newspapers, and 5000 manuscripts. All documents are kept in special heat and humidity conditions.
You can also taste traditional Aegean Kitchen in the Restaurant which is situated in the courtyard.
City Archives and Museum is open seven days of week, from 08.30 to 18.00.
